How to Select Color and Design for S. California Concrete Floors

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

If you’re considering a floor coating update, you may not know how to begin the process. With so many designs, colors and coating types, decisions can quickly become overwhelming. The possibilities continue to grow, especially for concrete floors.

What are my coating options?
Whether you choose epoxy, urethane or non-slip coatings, or you simply stain your concrete floor, each coating offers different advantages. For more about the benefits of epoxy and urethane coatings, check out “Who Needs Floor Coatings?”

What are my color and design options?

  • Due to the permanency of stain colors, many business owners opt for neutral tones, such as light tans, browns, grays and greens.
  • More dynamic colors can be achieved by using water-based stains. This will create pastels and other colors rather than the acid-based earth tones.
  • If you’re looking for a glossy finish that also offers heat and scratch resistance, you may want to look into urethane coatings.
  • Epoxy coatings are available in an array of colors and patterns and also provide durability and chemical resistance.
  • Color effects will generally be more intense on new concrete than on older or weathered concrete.

Most painting contractors will provide color charts or samples of concrete so you can visualize the options.
